Piano Recital with James Oakes

Pianist James Oakes presents a concert commemorating the 200th anniversaries of the death of Haydn and birth of Mendelssohn. Concert also features 19th and 20th century African-American women composers Anna Gardner Goodwin, Mabel Bailey, Julia Perry, and Margaret Bonds.

James Oakes taught piano and music theory at Louisiana’s Xavier University for 35 years. He now divides his time, living and concertizing in New Orleans and Dresden, Germany. His specialty is modern music. A native of Everett, Washington, Dr. Oakes graduated from Wheaton, Julliard and Catholic University.
